For decades, the YOX series constant-fill Fluid coupling has been the go-to solution for heavy-duty industrial drives requiring soft start, torque limitation, and vibration damping. Whether you operate belt conveyors, bucket elevators, crushers, or fans, the YOX Fluid coupling offers a simple, robust, and cost-effective way to protect your motor and driven equipment. This article explains the key features, operating principle, and typical applications of YOX Hydrodynamic couplings. Understanding why this Fluid coupling design is the industry standard will help you select the right model for your next project.
What Makes the YOX Fluid Coupling Different?
The YOX Fluid coupling is a constant-fill type, meaning the working chamber is permanently filled with a specified volume of hydraulic oil. Unlike variable-fill designs, the YOX Fluid coupling has no external scoops or moving internal parts to adjust fill level. This simplicity gives it exceptional reliability and low maintenance. However, the YOX Hydrodynamic coupling still provides all the essential benefits: a smooth, shock-free start, inherent overload protection (torque limiting), and excellent torsional vibration damping. The housing is made of high-strength cast iron or steel, with integrated cooling ribs to dissipate heat. Some YOX models also feature a delayed filling chamber for extended start-up times on high-inertia loads, making the Fluid coupling even more versatile.
How the YOX Fluid Coupling Works
Inside the YOX Fluid coupling, a pump wheel (connected to the motor) and a turbine (connected to the load) face each other. The chamber between them contains the hydraulic oil. When the motor starts, the pump wheel accelerates the oil, creating a fluid vortex. The oil strikes the turbine blades, transferring torque. Because there is no mechanical contact, the Fluid coupling absorbs shocks and limits torque when the load jams. The torque transmitted is determined by the fill level (fixed in YOX) and the slip between pump wheel and turbine. For normal operation, slip is typically 2–5%, which is very efficient. For high-inertia loads, a delayed-fill YOX Hydrodynamic coupling allows the motor to reach full speed before oil enters the working chamber, creating an even softer start.
Key Applications for YOX Fluid Couplings
The YOX Fluid coupling is widely used in:
Belt conveyors – Protects belts from tearing during start-up; limits torque during overload.
Bucket elevators – Provides smooth acceleration, reducing chain and bucket stress.
Crushers and mills – Absorbs shock loads from irregular feed; limits starting current.
Fans and blowers – Dampens vibration and extends bearing life.
Centrifugal pumps – Eliminates water hammer; protects seals.
In each case, the YOX Hydrodynamic coupling acts as a protective fuse between motor and load. When the load exceeds the coupling’s torque limit, the Fluid coupling slips, preventing the motor from stalling and avoiding mechanical damage. This is why the YOX series remains the preferred choice for mining, cement, steel, and power generation industries.

Advantages Over Other Coupling Types
Compared to a rigid Coupling or gear-type Coupling, the YOX Fluid coupling offers incomparable soft-start and overload protection. Compared to a VFD (variable frequency drive), the YOX Hydrodynamic coupling has lower initial cost, generates no electrical harmonics, and requires no air conditioning or special enclosures in dusty environments. It is also simpler to maintain than a hydraulic clutch. For heavy, continuous duty, the YOX Fluid coupling is often the most reliable and economical solution. Dalian Mairuisheng manufactures YOX Fluid couplings to international standards, with dimensions interchangeable with major European brands. We also offer custom mounting configurations and special materials for corrosive or high-temperature applications.
